The Ocean Does Not Disappoint

The ocean does not disappoint.
The wind does not smile,
nor weep.
The sand holds no wealth
save what is countable
in billions of grains.
The trees do not speak
of things that might harm you.
The sun does not betray
your friendship,
for it has no friend:
you feel no shame
in being kissed by it.

Author's note

Written by the ocean, in the midst of emotional turmoil. The poet seeks grounding in the elements (ocean, wind, sand, trees, sun) and finds it precisely in what they are not and do not do. The poem proceeds by negation: does not disappoint, does not smile, does not weep, does not betray. It is a catalogue of absences that are, in truth, a form of relief. Wealth, betrayal, shame: entirely human troubles, unknown to nature because it has no self-awareness. And it is precisely this unconsciousness that becomes soothing. The ocean cannot disappoint because it has never promised anything. The sun does not betray because it has no friends. Nature offers its warmth without the conditions and risks that attend every human bond, and the poet immerses himself in it as in a refuge where his emotions can finally grow still.
